The Faculty of Architecture at Istanbul Technical University (ITU) hosted a two-day symposium on 24-25 October 2025 to discuss the future of Palestine, the event, held at ITU in Istanbul, brought together global experts to address the ongoing crisis in Gaza and the future of urban life in Palestine. Discussions focused on the devastating effects of the war on Gaza’s infrastructure, the challenges of reconstruction, and the broader implications for the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
With Gaza experiencing unprecedented destruction, the symposium shed light on the severe toll the conflict has taken, including the deaths of over 50,000 Palestinians, 100,00 injuries, and the displacement of millions. Key topics included the collapse of Gaza’s infrastructure—70% of residential buildings, 80% of roads, and 88% of schools damaged—while 2.15 million people face food insecurity. Experts explored Gaza’s reconstruction models, focusing on recovery conditions and the roles local and international stakeholders must play in rebuilding Palestinian cities and communities.
The symposium also addressed broader themes, such as the impact of colonialism on Palestinian spatial planning, the decline of Jerusalem, and the future vision for Palestinian urbanism. Experts shared international case studies on post-war recovery, offering lessons for Gaza and the wider region. The event aimed to spark a conversation on a unified vision for Palestine, providing actionable strategies for urban recovery and fostering global support for a peaceful, resilient future.
