Jerusalem, 3 September 2024 – The Friedrich Ebert Stiftung (FES), a longstanding partner of the International Peace and Cooperation Center (IPCC), facilitated an important engagement between the IPCC team and Dr. Daniela De Ridder, Member of the German Bundestag.
During the meeting, the IPCC presented an in-depth overview of the current situation in East Jerusalem, emphasizing the impact of the Israeli planning system on Palestinian liveability and development. Particular focus was placed on the ongoing effects of the war in Gaza, with a detailed analysis of how these events have disrupted daily life in Palestinian East Jerusalem, especially within the Old City.
The presentation was followed by an informative tour of East Jerusalem, providing Dr. De Ridder with firsthand insight into the complexities on the ground. Highlights of the tour included:
- A review of the Old City’s visual basin plans, with a specific focus on the implications of "national parks" policies and the prioritization of a singular Jewish narrative over Jerusalem’s rich multicultural identity.
- A close examination of the separation wall and its socio-economic and geopolitical ramifications.
- An exploration of settlements established within Palestinian neighborhoods, underscoring the challenges these developments pose to the Palestinian community.
This event underscored the critical need for international awareness and engagement in addressing the pressing challenges faced by Palestinians in Jerusalem. The IPCC continues its mission to promote dialogue, understanding, and sustainable development in the region.
