Paris, July 2024 – A high-profile scoping workshop held in Paris brought together global experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the future of Gaza, focusing on the region's recovery and its integration within a larger metropolitan framework. The event, organized by UN-Habitat and the Heritopolis Society, sought to envision a path forward for Gaza, Rafiah, and Ashkelon, emphasizing regional cooperation and peace-building.
The workshop, held on July 1st and 2nd, 2024, explored the concept of a transfrontier metropolis, considering Gaza as part of a broader metropolitan area that spans Israel, Egypt, and Jordan. Named Anthedon, after the ancient Mediterranean gateway, the initiative aims to build a future based on cooperation, infrastructure, and shared heritage.
Key Discussion Themes:
- Population Growth and Youth Engagement: With Gaza's youthful population and high birth rates, the workshop highlighted the importance of creating hope for future generations, with a special focus on youth involvement in shaping the region's future.
- Health and Well-being: Experts advocated for a Health-in-All-Policies approach, integrating health strategies into urban planning for more inclusive, resilient cities.
- Economic Self-Sufficiency: The need for local economic growth was emphasized, particularly through small-scale investments, capacity-building, and regional integration with neighboring markets and industries.
- Infrastructure and Connectivity: A robust infrastructure system, including transportation, energy, and water networks, was identified as critical for Gaza’s development and its connection to the broader region.
- Environmental Sustainability: With climate change threatening the region, environmental solutions like coastal protection and sustainable agriculture were discussed as vital for Gaza’s future resilience.
- Cultural Heritage: The restoration and promotion of Gaza's rich cultural heritage were seen as essential for social cohesion and the reconstruction of local identity, particularly through youth engagement.
- Governance Models: A transfrontier governance structure was proposed, encouraging regional cooperation.
The workshop concluded by laying out a roadmap for future cooperation, with plans to present the outcomes at the World Urban Forum in Cairo IN November this year. The initiative aims to build long-term scenarios for Gaza, with a focus on regional cooperation and peace.
Moving forward, stakeholders will continue to work on developing practical strategies for the future, including a youth hackathon to engage young people. The overarching goal is to transform Gaza from a region of despair into one of hope and opportunity, fostering a cooperative future for all.
