In collaboration with the Economic Cooperation Foundation (ECF) and the Amman Center for Peace and Development (ACPD), a hybrid workshop was held in Athens from 10-12 July 2024 to address steps for reducing tension in Jerusalem, particularly in the Old City and its holy sites. The workshop emphasized Jordan's role as the custodian of Muslim and Christian holy places, highlighting its critical contribution to maintaining peace and stability. Discussions focused on the growing influence of the extreme religious Temple Movement and the Jewish prayers conducted since the war began, which have significantly escalated tensions in the area.
The Old City of Jerusalem remains acutely vulnerable, facing the loss of Palestinian properties due to aggressive actions by extreme religious Zionist settlers. The city endures marginalization, destruction of historical monuments, economic collapse, and daily hardships, jeopardizing both its residents and structures. Without urgent intervention, East Jerusalem risks a comprehensive failure across social, economic, and historical dimensions. Immediate actions are needed to prevent further deterioration and foster a path toward stability and coexistence.
