Implemented by the International Peace and Cooperation Centre (IPCC) and funded by UNDEF, this project aimed to empower women in the West Bank by enhancing their participation in local governance and urban and environmental planning. Targeting six subregions across the northern, central, and southern West Bank, particularly in Area C, the initiative focused on raising awareness, building capacity, and advocating for policy-level action. Activities primarily engaged grassroots activists, women in local councils, young professionals, and recent graduates in relevant fields such as engineering and architecture.
Key components of the project included conducting a detailed needs assessment, organizing community awareness campaigns, and hosting 24 half-day awareness sessions in alignment with the Palestinian government’s 2011–2013 strategic plan for gender mainstreaming. Training activities equipped women with knowledge and skills to participate in governance and planning processes, while public awareness initiatives fostered greater community support for women's roles in these domains.
The project achieved two main outcomes: increased public awareness and support for women’s participation in local governance and urban planning, and enhanced capacity for women to contribute effectively to these areas. Despite challenges posed by the security situation, the initiative successfully addressed barriers to women's engagement, promoting their inclusion in decision-making processes critical to local development in the West Bank periphery.
