The IPCC Urban Design Programme is focused on utilising public space as an agent of change and sustainable development, as well as promoting the role of design in redefining our Palestinian dwelling places, especially in East Jerusalem. The program is advancing new models of research, practice and design to meet the challenges of rapid urbanisation under extreme circumstances.
Decades of neglect and the lack of planning and zoning for the Palestinians in East Jerusalem and Area C, present a long-term, complex challenge to redefine design paradigms in order to reduce tension and create positive, interactive spaces which can meet demands and reflect Palestinian urban identity. We achieve this through publishing reports, hosting design studios and presenting exhibitions of proposed work.
As part of the Urban Design programme, design studios offer Palestinian and international participants a platform to find creative solutions to the design challenges involved with planning in Palestine. They are able to analyse the urban fabric and infrastructure, undertaking practical and detailed research into specific sites and living conditions.
